Trinity Mental Health Service, LLC's mission is to offer diagnostic and medical treatment options for psychiatric and substance abuse disorders.  We strive to  work in a collaborative manner with the patient, in an atmosphere that is comfortable and confidential. The goal of treatment is to reduce the symptoms of illness, so that you can live your life to the fullest potential. We believe in the recovery model, which means we identify your individual strengths that can be used to keep you healthy, to allow you to live your life to the fullest. Recovery from illness is not an event, it is a process.  I'd like to work with you to set the goals for treatment. Oftentimes, this involves the use of medications of various types. However, medication is just one tool that can be used in treatment. Exercise, proper nutrition, getting the right amount of sleep are all important in helping you feel better. Many times, people have had bad things happen to them which for some, can dramatically alter the course of his or her life. Should that be the case, I know many excellent psychotherapists in Richmond that I would be pleased to refer you to.

The amount of knowledge we have gained in terms of how the brain works has really increased by leaps and bounds, especially since I graduated from medical school. My special interest is in learning how the medications that are prescribed actually work, and I feel that leads to the more effective and efficient use of medication.  Increasingly, there is a growing recognition of the "mind-body connection" and new discoveries are made all the time about how inflammation and the function of the immune system can influence mood and anxiety.  Despite the scientific advances in psychiatry, people suffering with these illnesses are often stigmatized, and live riddled with shame and guilt.  In my experience, it has been very helpful for me to help people understand the biological basis for illness, or at least to try to explain it as best as I can.

Please be advised that I am not taking on new patients at this time. This is subject to change, and this policy is being continuously re-evaluated.

Dr. Louis Duchin is a board-certified psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience working with patients, and has a passion for helping ease the suffering that mental illness can cause. When he began medical school, he wanted to be a cardiologist, but after graduation, realized the tremendous positive impact that improving someone's mental health can make on their quality of life. A career in psychiatry was the obvious choice, and one that he approaches today with the same enthusiasm that he did when he first began.
